July
7, 2016
Today
marks the seventh “anniversary” of my brain tumor surgery. At the time of this
writing (11 a.m.), I was “under the knife” at NYU seven years ago. This day
always has significance for me because I survived. Sadly, it happens to be the
day I could have died.
I know
that no one in my life remembers this date anymore, except for me, which is
okay. Last week, when I was scheduling this week's plans, I said to Aiden, “July
7th is coming up soon, are we celebrating?”
As
usual, he had no clue what I was referring to, so I gave him some hints:
1. “You
made a lot of calls to people.” (Nothing.)
2. “My
sisters Joyce and Jayne came.” (Nope.)
3. “2009
– I survived.” (Oh – now he remembered.)
I end
up usually spending that anniversary day alone, quietly reflecting on what
could have happened. I talk to God and thank Him. I'm not upset that I'm the
only one who remembers it, because I don't remember big days for other people
unless I have notes galore around to remind me. (One area of my kitchen
actually looks like a miniature post office, with cards, stamps, stickers,
etc., to help me with that.)
I'm glad God helped me survive that long
surgery, even though that nasty tumor caused permanent changes in my life. He
had more for me to do, and I'm doing it.
For the coming year, I [Douglas Winslow Cooper] will be
excerpting, weekly, material from this almost-final version of the fine book by Janet Johnson Schliff, M.S. Ed., which she wrote over a three-year period with some coaching and editing help from me, through my business, Write Your Book with Me.
